Shorebirds (also known as waders) are a group of small to medium-sized (12-66cm) wading birds with a wide variety of bill sizes and shapes. There are over 240 shorebird species in the world, of which 70 have been recorded in Malaysia. Most shorebirds in Malaysia are long-distance migrants.

Malaysia sits on one of the nine great global migratory flyways, the East Asian Australian Flyway (EAAF). In recognition of its importance to these populations, Malaysia is one of the 19 member countries of East Asian-Australasian Flyway Partnership (EAAFP).
